Degree Show Paintings

Illegibility of text is the core of these abstract oil paintings with the intention of disabling the viewer from being able to interpret the content. The text used is personal to me and, because of this the canvases are my height (5ft6”) by my arm span (5ft6”). In reference to this, there are four paintings because essentially everyone has four sides - these being the front, the back and the two sides. Furthermore, the colours are derived from the four human elements; Earth, Air, Fire and Water.
For my initial painting I used the font ‘Times New Roman,’ which is a classical font and one which I have had most experience in using. As a contrast, for my next painting I used the font ‘Helvetica,’ which is the world’s most commonly used modern font and can be seen everywhere. For the final two paintings I sought after a more personal font, so I chose to use the handwriting of my parents. Both paintings use an amalgamation of both my mother and my father’s handwriting.
The aesthetic qualities of the painted surface play a prominent part within my practice, as I have continuously experimented with different techniques in order to get the desired effects.
The illegibility of the text is not just preventing the viewer from interpreting the content; it is obscuring and thus hiding the content, and allowing the viewer to make their own interpretation.

Vexations

Vexations was a collaboration of art music and dance which was published onto the internet for 3 days.
